Did you know?

That the breakdown of a gallon of gas according to Energy today and the US. Department of Energy looks something like this... Photobucket

70% of every dollar we spend for gasoline goes to foreign countries. Oil companies do not set the price of a barrel of oil, it is determined by global markets. 70% of every dollar is going to countries that hate us and would be happy if we were nonexistant.

17% of that same dollar goes to refining, distribution and service stations. Resulting in an avg. 7.4% profit.

13% the remainder goes to guess who? The US. Government! That's right, the government makes more profit than the Big Oil companies. The big oil companies make an average of 7.4% and our government makes almost double that.  What you hear is the headlines such as this one "Exxon reports $40.6 Billion profit in 2007",  but what you don't hear is that they had to shell out $390 billion to make that profit.  We are not here to make a case for the big oil companies, they in fact are making huge profits but they put out huge amounts of money to do so.  We are here to tell the truth. To show the whole picture.

The government would like us to think that the gas tax is there in fact to create tax cuts. That a raise in the gas tax would cut consumption, earmarking more money for public transportation and increasing the funding for alternative energy technologies. Yea right! It all sounds wonderful outlined on paper but as it filters down from Washington to the states, the accountability is not there.  The states end up with a blank check and when it comes to transportation the states have not exactly shown themselves to be the most responsible leaders with the public dollar. One only need look to the condition of our highways and bridges to know that is true. Unless the government was to earmark monies to specific priority projects and demand accountability, further increases in the gas tax will just account to be more hard earned money thrown out the window.

Is the answer to rising gas costs, more government taxation?
