Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, Changes her tune about Off Shore Drilling?

Did she or didn’t she?

Recently, the President lifted the Executive Branch restrictions on exploration, but Congress has not lifted its legislative restrictions. The only thing standing between the American people and these vast offshore resources is the United States Congress.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi recently, stopped a bill in Congress from being voted on and recessed for five weeks, leaving the disposition of the bill hanging. As previously reported the Republicans as a form of protest have stayed and have vowed to stay until the Congress reconvenes and is ready to take a vote. The Abercrombie-Peterson bill, named after Rep. Neil Abercrombie, D-Hawaii, the leading Democratic sponsor of the bill and Rep. John Peterson, R-Pa., chief Republican sponsor of the package says the bill would eliminate the offshore drilling ban and use an estimated $2.6 trillion in lease revenues it would generate to pay for state and federal programs promoting conservation and renewable energy and carbon-capture technology. The plan also calls for selling off 70 million barrels of light crude from the SPR and replacing it with cheaper heavy crude.

Further, in an August 1, 2008 article in The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) Nam President and CEO John Engler stated “Reps. Abercrombie and Peterson and their colleagues on both sides of the aisle have demonstrated their commitment to increasing domestic energy supply and lowering America’s energy bill with today’s proposal. They recognize the contribution that development of 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas on the OCS -- which is enough natural gas to heat 100 million American homes for 60 years -- will make toward energy independence and economic growth,” Engler concluded.

In a recent CNN Larry King Live show, Pelosi was quoted as saying “Well, we can do that," said Pelosi "We can vote on [offshore drilling]. But it has to be part of something that says we want to bring immediate relief to the public and [is] not just a hoax on them." Many have observed Speaker Pelosi’s comments as a change of tune however, an aide stated she did not change her mind she was merely stating strongly and clearly that she would only support a “comprehensive energy package”. In further comments on CNN, Larry King Live, she stated "If you ... only go with offshore drilling, you are increasing our dependence on fossil fuels and you will never free yourself of that addiction unless you invest in the renewable energy resources ..." ??

The Abercrombie-Peterson plan not only promotes conservation and renewable energy technology it outlines how it can be funded. We hope Speaker Pelosi will allow this bill to be voted on without further conditions. We need to move forward. There are other issues at hand.

Speak Now America! We want to hear from you.
