Rep. Kevin McCarthy R-22 CA The Future of the Republican Party
 

Kevin McCarthy is the Republican Congressman for the 22nd District of California. He assumed office on January 4, 2007. Born January 26, 1965 in Bakersfield, CA he is a 4th generation resident of Kern County. He is married to Judy McCarthy and they have two children, Connor and Meghan.  Kevin opened his first business at the age of 21, called Kevin O's Deli to raise money to go to California State University where he went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in marketing in 1989. He went on to complete his Masters of Business Administration in 1994.

Prior to his taking office as Congressman for the 22nd District Kevin McCarthy served as Chairman of the Young Republican National Federation known as one of the strongest political organizations in this country. From 1990-2002 McCarthy served as District Director for Congressman BIll Thomas, the Chairman of the very powerful House Ways and Means Committee. In 2002 McCarthy was elected to the State Assembly with 76% of the vote to go to represent the 32nd District.  In 2003 he was unanimously elected Republican Assembly Leader. He became the first freshman Assembly member and the first Kern County legislator to hold this post.  In November of 2004 he was easily re-elected to the Assembly with 79% of the vote.

In his first month in Congress, McCarthy was one of only three Republicans appointed by House Republican Leader John Boehner to serve on the House Administration Committee. He was also selected to serve as an Assistant Whip on the House Republican Whip Team. Finally, McCarthy was named to the powerful House Republican Steering Committee, which controls the committee assignments of House Republican members. His rapid ascension into leadership roles has not gone unnoticed – a Capitol Hill newspaper selected McCarthy as one of its “rising stars” in the 110th Congress and a few months later, a leading news magazine characterized Congressman McCarthy as a “young-gun” and dubbed him “the strategist” among three up and coming leaders in the House.

He supports the school voucher system
He does not support a government health care system
He is Pro-Life
He believes that "As a matter of principle, it is better to spend less than tax more"
