Mark Kirk, Republican member of the United States House of Representatives representing Illinois's 10th congressional district was born on September 15, 1959 in Champaign, IL. He assumed office on January 3, 2001. He is married to Kim Kirk. He attended the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México before graduating cum laude in history from Cornell University. Kirk received a Masters Degree from the London School of Economics, and a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University.

Prior to taking office, Kirk was commissioned in 1989 as an intelligence officer in the Naval Reserve. He is one of only two members of Congress serving as a drilling reservist one weekend a month and two weeks a year. Kirk served on the staff of Congressman John Porter, and eventually became his chief of staff. Kirk also served in the World Bank in 1990 before President George H. Bush named him as the Special Assistant to the Assistant Secretary of State for Inter-American Affairs at the U.S. Department of State. President Bill Clinton reappointed Kirk to work in his Administration on the restoration of democracy in Haiti. He also served as a Counsel to the House International Relations Committee.

Now in his fourth term, Congressman Kirk is a member of the powerful House Appropriations Committee and serves on two of its subcommittees: State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs, and Financial Services. Congressman Kirk is co-chairman of the Tuesday Group, which is a caucus of mainstream Republican Members of Congress.  In that capacity, Mr. Kirk works to advance a suburban agenda that is pro-defense, pro-personal responsibility, pro-environment, and pro-science. Congressman Kirk has written a number of provisions which have become law, including funding for commuter rail, improving veteran's health care, ensuring military voting, and boosting aviation security.

Here is how Rep. Mark Kirk stands on some of the issues:

He is Pro-Choice on abortion
He has a mixed record on affirmative action
He is considered by the HRC to be Pro-Gay Rights
He is Pro-Environment
He  maintains a Pro Family voting record according to the Christian Coalition
He is Pro-Gun Control
He favors teacher led prayers in school

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, September 1,2008 Kirk was quoted as saying:

"Our job as a Congress is to guide whoever the American people elect as their president. … My hope is to be the glue that prevents the lower angels of our nature in partisan politics from preventing progress."

Congressional Quarterly named Congressman Kirk as one of the "28 Emerging Leaders in Congress."  We agree.

This guy has a couple of good points, however, he is not someone that I would personally spend any time or money to promote. He sounds pretty far left to me.
