Addison Mitchell "Mitch" McConnell, Jr. is the senior United States Senator from Kentucky. He was born February 20, 1942 in Tuscumbia, Alabama. He assumed office in January 1985. He is married to Elaine Chao who is currentltly the Secretary of Labor. He has three daughters from a former marriage, Elly, Claire and Porter. He graduated with honors, in 1965 from the University of Louisville College of Arts and Sciences. He went on to attend the University of Kentucky College of Law where he earned his law degree.

In March 1967, during his final semester of law school, McConnell gained experience on Capitol Hill as an intern under Senator John Sherman Cooper, later as an assistant to Senator Marlow Cook, and was a Deputy Assistant Attorney General under President Gerald R. Ford. From 1978 until his election to the Senate, he was the Jefferson County Judge/Executive, the top political office in Jefferson County, which includes Louisville

McConnell was chosen by his Republican colleagues as the Minority Leader in November 2006, making him the top-ranking Republican in the 110th Congress, which convened January 3, 2007. McConnell is a staunch advocate of conservative principles, receiving a perfect score from the American Conservative Union in 2006. On November 5, he won a fourth term with 65 percent of the vote, the largest margin of victory for a Republican in Kentucky history. He currently serves as a senior member of the Appropriations, Agriculture and Rules Committees.

McConnell remains one of the strongest supporters of the American invasion of Iraq, which he considers a central part of the War on Terrorism. He holds the view that the violence in Iraq is perpetrated primarily by al-Qaeda and other international jihadists who would otherwise be engaged in terrorist actions within the United States.

Senator McConnell wrote the Gas Price Reduction Act. The GPRA calls for more offshore and domestic oil exploration, to try to curb rising gas prices. McConnell has also expressed strong support for the First Amendment. In doing so, he has expressed strong opposition to the Fairness Doctrine, which he believes would squelch freedom of speech on talk radio

Here is how Sen. McConnell stands on some of the issues:

He is Pro-Life
He has a Pro Business voting record
He has a 100% rating with the Cristian Coalition, he is Pro-family
He is Pro-Free trade
He is Pro-gun rights
He is rated 76% as Taxpayer's friend when voting on taxes.

Sen. McConnell had something to say to President Elect Obama at a recent news conference “What I’m saying to the new president and the new administration: ‘Do big things, and do them in the center, and you’ll be surprised at how much support you might have,’ " Otherwise, McConnell warned, his party would stand together and block a far-left agenda.
