Louis Buller "Louie" Gohmert, Jr., is a Republican U.S. Representative from Texas's 1st congressional district. He was born August 18, 1953 in Pittsburg, Texas. Rep. Gohmert assumed office on January 4, 2005.  He is married to Kathy Gohmert and they have three daughters, Katy, Caroline and Sarah.  Gohmert received his B.A. from Texas A&M University in 1975. While at A&M, he was a Brigade Commander of the Corps of Cadets. He later received his Juris Doctor from Baylor University in Waco in 1977.

Prior to taking office Gohmert served in the Judge Advocate General's Corps, U.S. Army, at Fort Benning, Georgia, from 1978 to 1982. He also was elected to three terms as District Judge in Smith County, Texas. During his tenure on the bench, Louie gained national and international attention for some of his innovative rulings. He was later appointed by Texas Governor Rick Perry to complete a term as Chief Justice of the 12th Court of Appeals.
 
Gohmert serves on three House committees. Because of his judicial background, he was appointed to the Judiciary Committee. He also serves on the Committee on Resources and the Small Business Committee. His district sits on top of the East Texas oil field, making the Resources committee important to the region. The district's constituents are also mainly employed by small business owners.

In June, Rep. Louie Gohmert was recognized with the Patriot Award for his leadership in fighting to preserve Christian and conservative values. The Congressman was honored by the Texas Eagle Forum, an organization devoted to strengthening individual participation in the political process and encouraging conservative, pro-family policies.

Following the banquet Gohmert stated, “It blesses my heart to have been gathered here with people who all care so deeply about the foundation of our country and the guidance of this government.  I am truly humbled to receive such an award in the midst of these folks. We all desire to preserve the traditional values on which our founders built this nation, and knowing that we are unified in this gives me greater strength to keep fighting for these values in the places and situations that God has placed me.”

Recently in the news and a feature article of ours on Saturday, is Rep. Gohmerts proposal for a "Tax holiday" where he proposes that for the first two months of 2009 American workers will pay no income tax and no FICA tax. This will result in them taking home about 33% more in their pay. In a recent interview gave this reasoning for the Tax holiday,

"Instead of deciding who is going to get big bonuses or retreats. you want to shore up mortgages, have Christmas presents bought, have stocks bought? I'm hearing, a lot of people want to buy stock, they don't have money. Let them have their own income tax money back. They will shore up the stock market. They will be able to catch up on their mortgages, and we will be all — able to be all right. It's a very basic principle."

"And — and, if you look, people are agreeing, maybe we shouldn't let Paulson throw another $350 billion out at — at other causes or whoever he wants. Just $350 billion, in January and February, we could tell everybody, keep your income tax payments. Keep your FICA payments. If you make — gross $6,000 a month, it's an extra $2,000-plus for each month for two months. We're still under $350 billion. It goes to The people that need it, who will really get this economy excited. People who are listening, if you think about, get your around all that much extra money every month coming, you can get on your feet. We can get this economy going in a hurry, and forget the billions that are going for cronyism."
