Michael S. Steele  is currently the chairman of GOPAC and a partner at the law firm of Dewey & LeBoeuf. He is a former Lieutenant Governor of Maryland. He was born, October 19, 1958 at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. He is married to Andrea Steele.

Steele earned a bachelor's degree in international relations in 1981 from John Hopkins University. After college, Steele spent three years as a seminarian in the Order of St. Augustine in preparation for the priesthood. He entered the Augustinian Friars Seminary at Villanova University in Pennsylvania. As a seminarian, he taught freshman world history and senior economics for one year at Malvern Prep School in Malvern, Pennsylvania, but ultimately decided on a career in law and he left the Seminary prior to taking the vows. He went on to get his juris degree from Georgetown University in 1991.

Steele was the first African American to serve in a Maryland state-wide office and the first Republican lieutenant governor in the state since the position was created in 1970. At the time he was the highest-ranking elected African American Republican in the United States.

Recently, Steele has attained national prominence due to his stature as a successful elected conservative Republican African American and his public speaking. At the 2004 Republican National Convention, Steele gave the Republican counterpoint to the Democrats' Barack Obama in a prime time speech, Steele's first major national exposure. In April 2005, President Bush chose Steele as one of three members of the United States delegation at the investiture of Pope Benedict XVI at the ceremonial mass in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City.

The distinguished awards and honors received by Lt. Governor Steele include being named a 2005 Aspen Institute Rodel Fellow in Public Leadership. He also was awarded the Bethune-DuBois Institute 2005 Award for his work in the ongoing development of quality education in Maryland.

Here is how Michael Steele stands on some of the issues:

He is against the Death Penalty
He is Pro- Life
He is opposed to the No child left behind Act
He is Pro- gun ownership
He opposes Amnesty for undocumented workers
He supports Affirmative Action

In a recent article November 26th, for Politico.com Steele wrote:

"Return to timeless Republican principles. And include a positive, optimistic message that envisions a new, stronger, more prosperous American future. Ronald Reagan spoke to our deepest longing as a people. He gave a voice to principles that are true for all people in all times. Retool our message, but base it on those proven conservative principles for which our party has always stood: Our freedom is from God, not government. Our prosperity comes from a free people in a free market, not overtaxing, free-spending bureaucrats. We celebrate and protect life, born and unborn. And our best hope for a brighter future is in the empowerment of individuals and families, not in the constraints imposed by a bloated bureaucracy."

"The Republican Party needs an overhaul not just an adjustment if we’re to create a new Republican majority. Once again, we need to speak directly to the hopes, concerns and aspirations of Americans. So let’s stop telling Americans what we’re against and instead articulate a compelling vision of what we’re for, how we’ll lead and where we want to go."

We could not agree more....
