Republicans Afraid Of Debate Over Sotomayor
Sotomayor Has Made Racist Statements
Some Republicans appear afraid of a debate with the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor as a Supreme Court Justice. These Republicans are afraid because Sotomayor is the first Hispanic ever nominated for the Supreme Court.
Conservative Republicans want an open and honest debate on Sotomayor's nomination. Judge Sotomayor has made statements that have racist connotations and would disqualify her to be a juror at a trial. These and other issues need to be thoroughly investigated before some of these Republicans capitulate on Sotomayor's nomination.
Some high profile Republicans like radio host Rush Limbaugh and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia believes Republicans need to harshly criticize Sotomayor. Both Limbaugh and Gingrich have called Sotomayor a racist for statements she has made.
Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) head of the Republican Senate campaign committee harshly criticized Limbaugh and Gingrich for their words. He said, "I think it's terrible. This is not the kind of tone that any of us want to set when it comes to performing our constitutional responsibilities of advise and consent. Neither of these men are elected Republican officials. I just don't think it's appropriate. I certainly don't endorse it. I think it's wrong."
Republican strategist Peggy Noonan urged her party to "play grown-up," and dismissed as “idiots” conservatives who were out to attack or brand Sotomayor.
Judge Sotomayor said in a discussion, "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." Judge Sotomayor sitting on the court denied a white firefighter’s promotion because of race.
Imagine if a white male judge were to say, "My experience is a white man might be a better judge than a Latina woman would be." Imagine that same judge denying an African-American firefighter a promotion just because of their skin color.
A judge who made those statements would be called a bigot. That is what the judge is. Would there be any doubt that a white male would be forced to withdraw his nomination for the Supreme Court?
Republican senators it is your job to investigate and expose Judge Sotomayor for what she is. This isn't about a Hispanic woman, it's about a Supreme Court justice for life. Senators do your job and don't worry about Hispanic votes that you don't have any way. You may actually gain more Hispanic votes by doing your job.
