Obama To Speak In Egypt
The Muslims see socialist Barack Hussein Obama's offer of a new beginning an attempt to stem the growing influence of extremism, particularly in Iran, with its regional and nuclear ambitions, and to bolster moderate Muslim allies.
The Muslims say they want respect for Islam, a prescription for Palestinian statehood and assurances of a speedy US pullout from Iraq. Socialist Obama's soaring oratory skills (teleprompter) and Muslim roots have kindled hopes among Muslims.
Obama "has to walk the talk," said social activist Marina Mahathir, daughter of Malaysia's former prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad. Mohammed Wasel, a 20-year-old Egyptian said Obama will be judged by his actions, not his words.
With hopes rising though come the risks of disappointment. Socialist Obama isn't expected to present a detailed version of a Mideast peace deal. Socialists Obama never gives details, the teleprompter doesn't have any details.
Youth unemployment in the Middle East and North Africa is the highest in the world, with one in four young Egyptians sitting idle, the U.N. says. Nearly 20 percent of Egypt's 79 million people live on less than $2 a day. Islamic militants from Egypt, including al Qaida's No. 2 Ayman al-Zawahiri, have exported their violent ideology. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, like other U.S. allies in the region, tolerates little opposition.
Obama will have to strike a balance between raising human rights violations in Egypt and elsewhere in the region, while not sounding like he is trying to impose U.S. values. The Bush administration's pro-democracy campaign in the Middle East was widely seen as hypocritical, particularly after the U.S. refused to deal with the Islamic militant Hamas despite its 2006 election victory in the Palestinian territories.
Millions of Muslims in Europe struggle to win acceptance and shed the stigma of extremism, without sacrificing their customs. They have fought for the right to build mosques and have girls wear headscarves in schools, a sign of religious observance. Obama may not have much to offer in their struggles.
Muslims around the world have a stigma of extremism because they all are extreme. All people and religions should have the ability to maintain their customs and religion. But when it becomes obsessive and hurtful to others then there have to be curbs. Cutting off people's hands, beheading people, and treating women as chattel is extreme and needs to be curbed. The Islamic doctrine of killing all Americans is extreme and needs to be curbed.
Everyone wants peace around the world. Socialist Obama, don't go to Egypt and tell Muslims around the world how bad Americans are. The world has heard enough of you berating the country you're supposed to be President of. Obama don't promise the Muslims everything and sell Israel our ally out.
