Tax Cheat Rangel Resign As Ways & Means Chairman
Carter Resign Or Face Resolution
The elitist progressive Charles Rangel (D-NY) Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee admitted last week that in recent years he has underpaid his taxes by about $10,000. The nation's top tax writer can't figure out what to declare as income, and what not to declare.
Rangel also falsified official documents with the House of Representatives. Rangel neglected to report a checking account with the Congressional Federal Credit Union and one with Merrill Lynch, each valued between $250,000 and $500,000; the tens of thousands of dollars he's earning from dividends from a number of mutual funds and stocks; and the money made from the sale of a Harlem townhouse. As a result, Mr. Rangel's reported net worth doubled, from between $516,015 and $1,316,000 to between $1,028,024 and $2,495,000.
Representative John Carter(R-TX) on Thursday re-issued his ultimatum to embattled House Ways and Means Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.): resign your post, or face a resolution that would force your ouster.
Representative Carter argued Wednesday that those mounting allegations sufficiently make the case for Rangel's removal from the powerful Ways and Means committee. Stressing that his efforts did not constitute "a personal attack against Mr. Rangel," he implored Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to permit an up-or-down vote on his forthcoming resolution.
"We are concerned about the fact, and the folks back home are concerned about the fact, it seems the head of the tax writing committee gets special treatment from the [Internal Revenue Service] that the average citizen is not getting," Carter said. "The rule of law should prevail."
Representative Carter said,"It's ongoing, but it's ongoing into its second year, with nothing being done thus far," of the ethics investigation in an interview with Fox News. "This is an issue that I think is embarrassing for our Congress, because the chairman is being treated special, when we should all be treated equally in this country."
The scope of Rangel’s omissions means they could have only been willful and deliberate. The Ethics in Government Act of 1978, as amended, provides that the Attorney General may seek civil penalty of up to $11,000 against an individual who knowingly and willfully falsifies or fails to file or report any information required by the Act. (5 U.S.C. app. § 104).
In addition, 18 U.S.C. § 1001, as amended by the False Statements Accountability Act of 1996, is applicable here, That criminal statute, as here relevant, provides for a fine and/or imprisonment for up to five years for knowingly and willfully making any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation, or falsifying, concealing or covering up a material fact, in a filing under the Ethics in Government Act.
America Rangel breaks the law, doesn’t pay his taxes, and he writes the tax code. Would any Republican get the treatment Rangel is from Nancy Pelosi? No, Pelosi would crucify any Republican that had done half as much.
