Cap & Trade Is Redistribution Of Wealth
CO2 Is Not A Pollutant
By Lawrence (Larry) Collins
To quote a National Geographic article on global warming, "The gas responsible for the most warming is carbon dioxide, also called CO2. Other contributors include methane released from landfills and agriculture (especially from the digestive systems of grazing animals), nitrous oxide from fertilizers, gases used for refrigeration and industrial processes, and the loss of forests that would otherwise store CO2." I have been listening to the left of the political spectrum decry CO2 as a pollutant since the debate began over President Obama’s promotion to pass a "Cap and Trade" piece of legislation. The premise of the legislation would be to tax those persons/organizations/companies which create more CO2, and thus pollute the environment.
I have always been suspicious of the premise that CO2 is a pollutant and was recently reminded of my 10th grade biology class where I learned that CO2 was part of the carbon cycle. While preparing a science class for a student, I came across a “Carbon Cycle” diagram in a current GED booklet. It showed that animals breathe oxygen and expel CO2. Plants, on the other hand, “breathe” CO2 and expel oxygen. This very simple diagram clearly made the point that one species is dependent on the waste of another species to stay alive. To plants, CO2 is not a pollutant; it is the source of life. You see, the National Geographic article suggests two things that are not true. First, that plants store CO2. They do not store it; they use it much the same way as we use oxygen. The second misstatement is that the forests of the world are diminishing (their term “loss of forests). This is also not true. Although we don’t know what our forests looked like in the 16th and 17th centuries, we do know that forests have increased since the 1900s. The other fallacy is that only trees count as plants. Every field of corn, every lawn, shrub, sports field (not covered by Astroturf) is a group of plants using CO2; and with modern farming and hydration techniques, we have increased these plant lives tremendously.
So, how can our “noxious” CO2 be killing the earth? We have been cleaning our air for decades and we continue trying to improve as we live on our earth. Look at photos from the 30s of Pittsburgh, New York City, and Kansas -- and see the pollution and dust we created by our overuse of the land and air.
Cap and Trade has nothing to do with cleaning our environment. It has everything to do with redistribution of wealth, and that is patently un-American. The left of this country is using scare tactics and bad science to make us believe that we are destroying the earth. Al Gore is a principle as is President Obama. They can’t tell you the truth about global warming because it wouldn’t “sell”. But they can scare your children into believing that the polar bears are dying and we will all be affected by this global warming nonsense. It was a lesson they both should have learned in the 10th grade.
