Public School Children Protest The Rich
Sixth, Seventh, Eighth Graders Protest Welfare Reform In Minnesota
Students Made to Protest for Social Justice at State Capitol
Where do your children go on field trips? Some may go on a field trip to the zoo or a museum, students from a Minneapolis charter school went to the state capitol to take part in a protest. Sixth, seventh and eighth graders from Southside Family Charter School chanted, held signs, and demanded answers on welfare reform outside of Gov. Tim Pawlenty's office Tuesday.
School director Eliza Goodwin said, "It is something that is absolutely part of our curriculum." Southside Family bases its curriculum around social justice issues and promotes demonstrations.
Goodwin said, "I think it's appropriate for kids to be learning about how citizen groups can come together and influence the governor or the legislature."
Some educators say this kind of field trip should be organized with caution. Joe Nathan who teaches educational issues at Macalester College said, "If they just say, 'Oh we're going to go out and protest,' that's not education that's indoctrination." Nathan said students should be encouraged to protest as long as they are informed on both sides of the issue.
It's time for a voucher system for education. Let parents chose where their children go. It's time for education not teaching radicalism.
America this is your tax dollars at work in our public schools. Do you want your children learning to protest and demand the 'rich' pay more taxes in school.
I want my chidren to learn to read, write, math, and about the history of America and what has made her Great.
