Obama Thanks Unions

76 Year Old Union Rule Changed

Barack Hussein Obama's National Mediation Board announced a change to a 76-year-old rule on union elections.  For 76 years the rule has been that if a union wants to organize a company governed by the Railway Labor Act they would have to get the approval of the majority of the workers. This rule was established to prevent strikes and work stoppages and to make sure that the majority of employees actually supported unionization.

Obama has had a difficult time in his attempt to get card check through Congress.  This would have eliminated the secret ballot for unions to organize in a business.  Obama has done the next best thing.  He has two new appointees on the National Mediation Board; Harry Hoglander and Linda Puchala. Hoglander was once a president of a pilots union. Puchala is the former president of the Association of Flight Attendants.

Obama’s new appointees to the National Mediation Board have helped change the rule.  Unions will only have to get the approval of a majority of the workers actually voting in a union election, not the majority of the employees.

The change is a major victory for unions that have struggled to reverse years of decline in membership. And it's the most significant so far in a string of White House moves designed to boost organized labor.

The most immediate impact of the change would be at Delta Air Lines, where unions are trying to organize about 20,000 flight attendants. Unions are also expected to target workers at smaller carriers, including Allegiant Air, JetBlue Airways, Republic Airways and SkyWest.

The final rule was approved 2-1, with Chairwoman Elizabeth Dougherty issuing a fierce dissent. Dougherty, who was appointed by President George W. Bush, said the change is "an unprecedented departure for the NMB and represents the most dramatic policy shift in the history of the agency."

Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson is already looking into overturning the rule change. He says he may consider using the Congressional Review Act, which allows lawmakers to overturn regulations issued by any executive branch agency. Isakson points out, "With this rule change, a union could be permanently recognized without a majority of employees having ever supported representation."

Obama is paying back unions.  He’ll call on them in November to support the Democrats running for election.  Again Obama says to hell with America and our economy.  Over 76 years of precedence gone.
