Immigration Reform – It Must Be True Reform This Time

Federal Government Must Do Its Job

Before the flames turn to embers from the recent blazing health care debate, the immigration reform battle will begin to rage in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.  The real issue is not immigration but illegal aliens; there is a distinct difference between the two.  We should not and cannot reward people for illegal behavior.  Significantly, the last attempt at immigration reform has not worked because illegal actions were rewarded with positive rewards.

Parish Jones, Ph.D., is a minister of the Presbyterian Church, USA who recently wrote an article in my local newspaper: the Saint Augustine Record.  While I will admit that Jones is a very articulate writer, many of his statements ring false.  He states that these illegal aliens do not cost us money.  Clearly, he has not been in a hospital emergency room and seen taxpaying Americans waiting to be seen while the aliens are being seen for free.  How much of our health care insurance premiums can be attributed to the free care received by illegal aliens?  Is this not a cost?

Next, we have the drain on our educational system.  Contrary to Jones’ claims that these aliens pay taxes, they are not paying the same taxes that we, as legal Americans, are paying.  Our teachers and administrators must deal not only with the issue of the language barrier in the schools they must also deal with the added financial burden of having the children of illegal aliens in their school districts.

Additionally, has anyone ever calculated how much of the money aliens earn is being sent out of America?   This is money that does nothing to help American business or the economy.  Those are dollars that—if spent or invested in America—would work toward incentivizing more jobs here in America.

Dr. Jones and others will surely try to make their point by using the overused amnesty argument that the jobs these 12 million illegal aliens do are jobs few Americans will do.  Not only is that statement old, it was made before we had millions of Americans out of work.   The people who are working and paying taxes need to step up and ask why Americans will not do these jobs.  With more than 17% of Americans out of work, there are plenty of them to step up and take these jobs that would be vacated by deported illegal aliens.

Just when did it become acceptable in America to live off of others and refuse to do menial work?  Have government handouts become so acceptable and lucrative that people will no longer do certain jobs?  By allowing this to be acceptable, the government is teaching generations of Americans that they can freeload and live off of those working Americans who pay taxes.

Along with immigration reform we need social program reform.  Government programs need to be focused and directed toward helping people who are working on the lower end.  Our government should be helping those who are trying to help themselves, not those who have learned to expect government handouts for doing nothing.  The lack of oversight within these programs is unacceptable.  Our government develops these programs at massive expense to the taxpayers but they fail to allow adequate funding to oversee the programs and thereby control abuse.

True reform will mean closing our borders and sending illegal aliens back to their country of origin.   Only once this is accomplished will we be able to begin to establish more viable immigration laws.  New laws must be written to deal with individuals and businesses who hire illegal aliens.  There must be heavy fines and strict punishment for offenders, with funding put in place for enforcement of these new laws; without such planning, the objectives will yet again fail.

Without reform, the problem of illegal aliens will only grow as more will come to America illegally knowing that eventually, they too, will be legalized.  With more than 17% of Americans unemployed, we must not legalize another 12 million illegal aliens.  The further strain on our already weakened economy will bring this nation to its knees.  We are already close to falling.
