Boehner “Vote Now”

Nancy Pelosi refuses to have a House vote on extending the Bush era tax cuts.  John Boehner is really pressing her to allow for a vote before they leave town on a Republican proposal to extend the Bush tax cuts for all Americans. Boehner says, "If Democratic leaders leave town without stopping all the tax hikes, they are turning their backs on the American people.

Boehner went on to say, "Adjourning the Congress at the end of this week without a vote to stop all the tax hikes will be a vote to raise taxes on the American people and destroy jobs ... To deny Republican and many Democratic members their right to offer alternative legislation to stop all the tax hikes would be an obvious attempt to circumvent the will of the House and the American people."

Pelosi won’t call for the vote for two reasons.  First, the Republican bill to extend the tax cuts for all would pass and Pelosi doesn’t want that.  Second, is that many Democrats would vote for the extension of the tax cuts for all.  Pelosi doesn’t want people making over $250,000 keeping their money.  Pelosi’s plan is a lame duck session after the elections will pass the extension just for those making less than $250,000.

Congressional Democrats and a top White House official said Congress will extend soon-to-expire tax cuts for low- and middle-income Americans after the Nov. 2 election. Republicans said the delay and the threat of higher taxes for top earners will hurt the economy.

Senator Mitch McConnell, of Kentucky, rejected Democratic charges that his party is holding up middle-class tax cuts in order to get lower taxes on the rich.   “The question is, do we want to raise taxes in the middle of a very, very tough economy?” McConnell said on the ABC program. “All the Republicans think that’s a bad idea and a substantial number of the Democrats think the same thing.”
