Harry Reid’s Scheme To Ignore Defeat
Rewrite 220 Year Old Rules To Maintain Power
Harry Reid is one of the most despicable men in America. Time and again we have seen him ignore the will of America and trample the Constitution. Now Reid wants to change a 220 year old rule of the Senate. This scheme is another power grab to thwart the will of the American people.
On November 2, 2010 America spoke and rejected the socialist agenda of Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid for America. In the lame duck Congressional session Reid showed he was ignoring his employer the people of America. Through more skullduggery Reid attempted to push through an agenda America had just said NO to.
At noon today 33 senators will have their oath of office administered by Vice President Biden in a ceremony that hasn’t changed much in 220 years. Each will sign a book recording the names of those who have held the distinguished title of US senator.
In the world’s greatest deliberative body, the arguments are conducted with the maximum attention to decorum and precedent, but they are arguments nonetheless. Senators will first choose a leader, and then adopt the rules governing debate.
Reid has been scheming behind closed doors to use his slim majority to vote on January 5 for the most drastic rules changes since 1975. In a closed-door meeting last week, Reid told the Democrats that he may outright break the rules on the first day of the 112th Congress in order to pass his audacious changes without bipartisan support.
Primarily Reid wants “filibuster reform.” He wants to change the number of votes needed to stop a filibuster from 60 to 51. Translation he knows to pass his socialist agenda he has to block any Republican moves to stop him.
"Democrats lost the election. Their power has been weakened significantly. So they are trying to do a Washington-insider tactic to try to grab power, even though the voters told them very clearly in the election that they didn't like them, and didn't like their policies," said a Republican Senate aide.
The framers carefully designed the Senate to be more deliberative and more difficult to force into quick decisions. The rules and structure protect the rights of the minority, the voice of individual Senators, and, by extension, the states they represent. In particular, the formulation of the Senate is meant to protect the interests of small states from the domination of those more populous. These characteristics serve the interests of the entire nation by keeping the union strong.
