GAO Government Wastes Billions Of Dollars

The GAO just released a report showing horrendous government duplication and waste.  The federal government wastes billions of dollars a year, yet Barack Obama and the Democrats want to keep growing the government.

"Go study that (report). It will show why we're $14 trillion in debt," said Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK). "Anybody that says we don't look like fools up here hasn't read the report.  We don't know what we're doing," Coburn chastised.

"Reducing or eliminating duplication, overlap, or fragmentation could potentially save billions of taxpayer dollars annually and help agencies provide more efficient and effective services," the report says. In one example, the report found that if the Defense Department were to make "broader restructuring" of its "military health care system" it "could result in annual savings of up to $460 million."

Some of the duplication:

• 82 programs across 10 agencies on teacher quality
• 80 economic development programs
• 80 programs for the “transportation disadvantaged”
• 56 programs across 20 agencies on “financial literacy”
• 47 job-training programs – 44 of them overlap - only five could provide an "impact study" since 2004 looking at "outcomes."
• 30 food-related laws across 15 agencies
• 20 programs on homelessness across 7 agencies
• 18 programs for domestic food assistance - U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Health and Human Services -- with GAO estimating $62.5 billion spent on them.

There are more than 2,100 data centers -- up from 432 a little more than a decade ago -- across 24 federal agencies. GAO estimated the government could save up to $200 billion over the next decade by consolidating them.

America this is just the tip of the iceberg.  The waste and duplication in the government is criminal.  Yet Obama and the Democrats say we can’t cut anything from the budget.  Obama is growing the government by 9,000 people a month.
