Union Protects Teacher Who Watches Student Fight

YouTube Of Fight As Teacher Stands There

A student being punched in the face repeatedly by another student is disturbing.  What you should find even more disturbing is the fact that the teacher stood by, with his hands in his pockets, as the student was beaten. However, what is truly appalling is the fact that the American Federation of Teachers is protecting the teacher’s lack of action.

The fight took place at Seagoville HS Dallas, TX.  According to the Teachers’ Union, the student’s teacher was justified in standing there with his hands in his pockets while a kid got beaten because, in the union’s words:

“Teachers have intervened in the past,” acknowledged Rena Honea of Alliance/AFT. “They have been injured. They have not been able to return to work. They have been reprimanded for intervening. So there is a huge question mark as to what’s truly appropriate.”

For months, Michael Milczanowksi said he has felt targeted at Seagoville High School. "It was ever-constant, never changing, ongoing harassment — that's all it was," he said.  Last week, Milczanowksi said it escalated in geometry class after an argument suddenly got physical.

Another student was attacked, knocking over the sophomore and then punching him at least five times.

"This kid was actually trying to hurt me, and I could see it in his eyes," Milczanowksi said, who is seen just standing there on the video.

More troubling, perhaps, is that his math teacher never physically tries to stop the conflict, although he is heard saying "quit" several times.

"I expected him to physically intervene to keep that from happening, but I guess I was wrong," Milczanowksi said.

Dallas ISD would only say it is investigating the incident, and that it has taken disciplinary action against the student who started it.  The math teacher though is getting support from his union.

Isn't it the responsibility of the teacher to keep order in the classroom?  This teacher shirked his responsibility.  Why would the union back him?  The union is only worried about union dues.  They could care less if students are taught or teachers do their job.

Personally, I have to side with the teacher. Public school teachers are really in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" position. In most jurisdictions they aren't allowed to physically touch a student and can face termination and legal liability if they do so. And if they get hurt trying to break up a fight, they don't get any compensation for their injuries (a teacher is only granted compensation if they can prove that the school was somehow at fault for their injury). But if they stay out of a fight, then they get vilified for not protecting the children and maintaining order. Sorry, but teachers are not law enforcement officers and shouldn't be expected to put themselves in harms way and act as such.
